Fairfield and Westport,
Connecticut are two charming and affluent coastal towns. Both are situated on
Long Island Sound within Fairfield County. These communities enjoy a close
proximity to Manhattan and New York with only a 50-mile distance between them
and "The Big Apple."
The larger of the two, Fairfield, has a population of around 53,000 residents and
spreads over an area of 30 square miles. Fairfield boasts a 6-mile coastline with
spectacular beaches. Fairfield, as a community holds deep in its spirit the rich
tradition of its history. There are numerous historical sites woven throughout town
reflecting this reverence. At the western edge of Fairfield, part of the Southport
area (settled in 1639) has been designated a historic district for its harbor,
churches, public buildings and the homesteads of some of this country's first
families.
Wealthy and culturally exciting Fairfield is ideally positioned for elegant living,
an abundance of leisure activities and convenient travel to metropolitan areas. The
cultural diversity and arts community are both impressive and expressive, and local
fairs, festivals and fundraisers are enjoyed throughout the year like the
much-anticipated annual Dogwood Festival that attracts thousands of visitors each
May. Another compelling feature of Fairfield is its ease of transportation. There
are two train stations here maintained and serviced by Metro-North Railroad, as well
as Interstate 95, which is a major artery, plus Connecticut's scenic parkway, Route
15.
There are several parks throughout town that overlook the Mill River, offering the
tranquil pleasures of picnicking, bicycling, walking and nature study. Residents may
swim in freshwater at Lake Mohegan, and in the winter months, ice-skating is enjoyed
at Owen Fish Park, Sturges Pond and Gould Manor Park. In addition, there are six
golf courses, public beaches, tennis courts, playgrounds and outdoor activities for
everyone to enjoy in this quaint community.
An extensive and diverse range of housing is available, from the older Stratfield
section and historic Southport on the water, to the lovely landscape of Greenfield
hill. Fairfield is a town where there really is a place for everyone. There are
stately colonials dating from the late 1700s, statuesque Greek Revival estates,
Federal and Victorian homes, as well as striking contemporary structures and a wide
variety of condominiums. List prices range from $500,000 to $25 million and the
average sales price is $700,000.
The other community, Westport is on the north shore of the Long Island Sound and is
a unique combination of two ways of life: the rural and the urban. It is less than
50 miles from Broadway's bustling energy, and a just few minutes from the quiet
charm of the sea or the embrace of wooded countryside. Westport is a highly
desirable community for its proximity to Manhattan, strong educational system,
great recreational facilities, an appreciation and focus of the arts, unique shops,
quality restaurants, beautiful beaches and charming town center.
Westport began its second renaissance when the era of mills and farms subsided.
Famous writers, artists and theater people set the stage by seeking a retreat from
the demands of New York. Here they found another world just a brief train ride away
into Connecticut. Nestled against the seacoast and the green woods was a much sought
after haven. Since the 1920s, Westport has been considered an "artsy" type of
community and home to many celebrities.
Now a town of more that 26,000 inhabitants and considered one of the wealthiest
towns in the country, Westport's creative arts community influences the town's
sophisticated cosmopolitan atmosphere. Westport's vibrant downtown area and healthy
commercial environment generate the feeling of a New England town with the
conveniences of modern life, and this continues to attract people who are leaders
in all facets of society. The median household income is $119,872 per
year.
Westport's superb natural setting inspires a plethora of recreational activity and
outdoor excitement. Residents take advantage of the pristine beaches and sparkling
waters of Long Island Sound for many exciting water sports. Boating enthusiasts, in
particular, appreciate the fine marinas and private yachting clubs of town. Long
Shore Country Club and abundant private country and hunt clubs offer golf, tennis,
swimming and social events for all ages. An active recreation commission oversees
activities and facilities on over 200 acres of preserved land. Sherwood Island State
Park features additional shoreline fun and excellent trails for hiking and nature
study.
Along with its attractive blend of seashore, and country charm, Westport, which
includes Saugatuck, offers a diversity of cultural pursuits that include several
theaters, a nature center, expansive library, and museums. Local favorites include
the Levitt Pavilion, located on the Saugatuck River, that during the summer features
a variety of family concerts and performances, as well as the Westport Playhouse that
hosts professional touring companies. Soothing chamber music concerts are performed
by the Westport Friends of Music in the autumn and winter, and the Green Farms
Center for the Arts offers theater, music and art exhibits throughout the year.
The architecture and pleasing cultural offerings of Westport reflect a
well-established history as a desirable summer resort, and the affluent
lifestyles of residents. Impressive waterfront properties grace the coastline,
while magnificent estates, country-houses and streamlined contemporaries dot the
countryside. The median value for a single-family residence is $625,800.
The schools in both communities are regarded as exemplary and score in the very top
of state and national exams. Two well-known colleges - Fairfield University and
